OEM and Contract Manufacturers are encouraged to advise their trading partners who are brand owners to apply for the GS1 barcode number from GS1 Malaysia. Alternatively they can apply for an additional GS1 membership license for each of their trading partners as long as they are already an active GS1 Malaysia Member.

GS1 Small Block Membership - special license for10 unique GS1 barcode numbers
GS1 Malaysia offers a special small block membership for companies (typically sole-proprietor or partnership) who require barcode numbers for:
i) products with very limited production run OR
ii) products from a very limited product catalogue (i.e. only have 1-2 product types, variants or models total over the next 5 or more years) OR
iii) festive, seasonal or promotional product items OR
iv) GS1 vouchers.
If your requirement falls under this category:
A) Kindly apply online by clicking here: https://www.gs1my.com/member/r1/, and remember to download, complete and submit the Small Block Acknowledgement Form for further processing.
B) You must also prepare and submit to us an official letter (with company letterhead and signed by company management) stating the following:
i. You would like to apply for the Small Block Membership License,
ii. You are applying for the Small Block License instead of the Standard License because <List reasons for choosing Small Block over Standard License>,
iii. You are aware of and acknowledge the limitations of the Small Block License and understand that if you exceed 10 products that require GS1 barcodes, you must apply for our Additional Membership License, which will add to your renewal fees.
Applicants must take note that this special membership license is:
a) Subjected to further deliberation and review by GS1 Malaysia,
b) NOT SUFFICIENT for normal product allocation.
When assigning barcode numbers to products and trade items, it is important to take note of Aggregation, which is the creation of a hierarchical, parent-child relationship between a containing object (i.e. parent) and one or more objects (i.e., children) that are contained. A simple example of aggregation is between a product and a carton; labelling a carton with a barcode number that is related to the product's barcode number. Due to this relationship, the number of barcodes required for a single product category can easily exceed 10.

*GS1 membership renewal fee will be increased by an amount equal to the fee of each additional membership successfully applied

**** The barcode number generation service is an optional as-needed service to help generate barcode numbers from a GS1 member's allocated block of barcode numbers; at RM250.00 for every 250 barcode numbers.
GTIN-8 Registration
Applicable to companies who are already GS1 Malaysia members but require a smaller barcode subset due to products with a footprint too small for conventional EAN-13 barcode symbols.
The fee is RM250.00 per GTIN-8. As of 18 December 2018, your annual subscription fees will be increased by an amount equal to the price of each GTIN-8 number requested.

Universal Product Code (UPC) Application
UPC Codes are an earlier GS1 barcode identifier that is commonly used for products sold in or coming from the USA and Canada. The UPC Membership License is available for subscription by existing active GS1 Members. Kindly take note of the following before you apply:
- It is a separate membership license.
- It available for subscription only by existing active GS1 Members.
- A standard GS1 barcode number consists of 13 digits, hence it is called GTIN-13 or EAN code, while the UPC barcode number consists of 12 digits, hence it is called GTIN-12 or UPC Code. Both are issued by GS1.
- Both codes are accepted as official barcode numbers worldwide by the GS1 Community as long as they are issued by a valid GS1 Member Organisation (MO).
- UPC Codes are still in use today mainly due to legacy hardware/software, logistical or business-related reasons.
- When requested by your local trading partner in those countries, kindly take note that they will most likely refer to any barcode as "UPC Code" or just "UPC". This is not a request for UPC Codes but a request that you have proper GS1 barcodes on your products. Make sure you check with them first before applying for UPC.
- If you are outside of the USA or Canada, only GS1 Malaysia (or your local GS1 MO) can issue UPC barcodes to you as part of the GS1 Alliance Agreement III with GS1 US.
