GS1 Small Block Membership - a special license for 10 unique GS1 barcode numbers

GS1 Malaysia offers a special small block membership for companies (typically sole-proprietor or partnership) who require barcode numbers for: 

  1. products with very limited production run OR
  2. products from a very limited product catalogue (i.e. only have 1-2 product types, variants or models total over the next 5 or more years) OR
  3. festive, seasonal or promotional product items OR
  4. GS1 vouchers.

Applicants must take note that this special membership license is:

a) Subjected to further deliberation and review by GS1 Malaysia,

b) NOT SUFFICIENT for normal product allocation,

c) Limited to only 10 barcode numbers, if your products exceed 10 after the fact, you will be required to apply for an Additional Membership License. 

 

If your requirement falls under this category, kindly follow the steps below:

A) Kindly apply online by clicking here: https://www.gs1my.com/member/r1/.

B) Submit the following documentation:

  • Company Registration Documents (SSM, Form 9, Section 14, etc.)
  • Latest Annual Returns (or Form 24)
  • Proof of Payment
  • Small Block Acknowledgement Form - Download and complete, then reupload.
  • Official Letter to GS1 Malaysia (See below (C))
C) You must also prepare and submit to us an official letter (with company letterhead and signed by company management) stating the following:

     i. You would like to apply for the Small Block Membership License,

     ii. You are applying for the Small Block License instead of the Standard License because <List down the reasons for choosing Small Block License over Standard License>,

D) Determine the amount payable (See the tables below)

Notes:

  • Renewal of your next applicable subscription fees will be every 2 years or Current Year + 1 Year in Advance. Your GS1 membership license renewal cycle is calculated to cover a product under the Product Life Cycle.
  • VbG-PDSS = Verified by GS1: Product Databank Support & Services, RM 380.00, renewed at least once a year.
  • The barcode number generation service is an optional as-needed service to assist GS1 new members to generate their GS1 barcode numbers; RM100.00 for 10 barcode numbers. Barcode numbers generated are from a GS1 member's allocated block of barcode numbers.
  • Deposit will be refunded upon official resignation (official resignation letter must be provided) of GS1 Malaysia membership.

 

E) Take note of the amount payable to renew the GS1 Membership License (See the table below).

Notes:

  • The renewal invoice will be sent by GS1 Malaysia after the expiration of the initial application fees.
  • The renewal invoice will contain 2 years worth of subscription fees.
  • Subsequent renewal invoices will be sent every 2 years.

 

When assigning barcode numbers to products and trade items, it is important to take note of Aggregation, which is the creation of a hierarchical, parent-child relationship between a containing object (i.e. parent) and one or more objects (i.e., children) that are contained. A simple example of aggregation is between a product and a carton; labelling a carton with a barcode number that is related to the product's barcode number. Due to this relationship, the number of barcodes required for a single product category can easily exceed 10.
