The Threat of Unauthorised Numbers to Product Identity Governance

Did you know?

Recently, a site known as "Barcode Savers Malaysia" has taken content from our own website and attempted to rebut it, promoting their unaffiliated identifiers as a superior and cheaper alternative to genuine GS1 standards.

Another site, “Barcodes Malaysia”, listed claims on their front page that directly undermines the integrityuniqueness, and ubiquity of the GS1 System and Identification

We wish to state in the clearest terms:

  • GS1 is the only authorised organisation to allocate GTIN-13, GTIN-14, GTIN-8, GTIN-12, EAN-13, ITF-14, UPC-A & UPC-E barcodes.
  • GS1 does not authorise, employ or collaborate with any third party company, reseller or distributor to sell, assign or distribute GS1 barcode numbers or memberships on our behalf.
  • Unathorised barcode resellers do not represent GS1, and their issued numbers do not uniquely identify and protect your brand and products.
    • Barcodes Malaysia
    • Barcode Savers Malaysia
    • "OEM Group Hani +6011-****8380"
    • Any GS1 Member who has sold, traded, gifted or loaned their allocated numbers to unaffiliated or 3rd party companies, violating GS1 Terms and Conditions.
  • These unauthorised resellers do not provide any after-sales service or support, do not provide validation or verification and do not assist in any disputes related to the identity integrity of your product.

How Unauthorised Numbers Undermine the Integrity of GS1 Standards

Choosing an unauthorised reseller jeopardises your brand's credibility and global interoperability. Their claims are not just misleading; they are a direct threat to the reliability of your product data in the local, regional, and global marketplaces.

Companies can only acquire barcodes from official GS1 member organizations (MOs) such as GS1 Malaysia. Every country has only one GS1 member organization, such as GS1 Australia, GS1 China, GS1 UK and GS1 US, serving more than 160 countries around the world. As a standards-based product identity governance organization, GS1’s mandate is linked to our international directive for data visibility and governance as well as country-specific regulations. Our members’ GS1 Membership License is the best proof of their legitimacy.

GS1 Malaysia Collaborates with Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Kos Sara Hidup (KPDN) on Unauthorised Numbers and Resellers

GS1 Malaysia is a strategic partner of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), MoH, NPRA, MDA & MITI to ensure that the GS1 Standards & Keys are indicative of good business practices and product identity governance.

The importance of an active GS1 membership license should not be underestimated. Having an active GS1 membership license means your details are recorded inside the:

  • Member Product Databank, a trusted product information repository governed and managed by GS1 Malaysia
  • GS1 Registry Platform, a GS1 repository and validation platform that is a part of the Verified by GS1 (VbG) Initiative that is referenced by marketplaces, e-marketplaces, regulatory agencies and consumers.

You will lose access to GS1's services and platforms should your membership become inactive.

Here is an example of unauthorised resellers that will compromise your brand’s integrity and visibility.
